he global agenda to decarbonise, industrialise, coupled with recent technological advancements (SMRs), has tipped many emerging countries towards nuclear power as an energy source.
Some countries in ASEAN, a region of over 600 million people, have expressed a keen interest to acquire nuclear power in a bid to meet their burgeoning energy needs and fulfill their commitment to net-zero carbon emissions.
Indonesia, the biggest thermal coal exporter, is trying to reduce the use of fossil fuels and encourage the use of new and renewable energy (NRE). The government is currently drafting a Grand National Energy Strategy. This document will later contain various strategies related to Indonesia’s energy transition. Although it is still in the planning stage, the document contains 14 strategic programs that will be implemented. One of the programs includes the building of nuclear power plants as needed and the establishment of a Nuclear Energy Program Implementing Organization (NEPIO).
PLN, the state-owned Indonesian electricity company announced in late 2021 that it plans to achieve carbon neutral by 2060. This effort is illustrated by its roadmap for the Zero Carbon 2060 scenario. PLN aims to start operating nuclear-based power plants in 2040 with a share of 4 percent.
The Philippines is also keen to pursue the nuclear option and is currently awaiting Presidential decree on National Position for nuclear energy. An executive order in July 2020 in which the President directed the creation of a nuclear power program committee composed of 17 government agencies led by the Department of Energy. The committee was tasked with coming up with recommendations on how to proceed with nuclear power in the country and eventually come up with a National Policy document. In a recent survey conducted on public perception of nuclear energy, 70% of population were in favour of nuclear power.
China has more than 50 operational nuclear power units and 24 are under construction. By 2035, China’s nuclear power generation will account for 10 per cent of the country’s electricity generation.
It is clear that nuclear energy is increasingly becoming an attractive and key option for many Asian countries as they seek to transition away from fossil fuel.
Nuclear energy developments in Asia is on an upward trajectory which also brings with it much industry developments and opportunities for both the local and international suppliers to be involved in.
With this in mind, Nuclear Business Platform currently has an opportunity for a Nuclear Project Manager (Asia) role for a candidate who is passionate about nuclear energy developments in Asia.
The ideal candidate will be responsible for all Asia related nuclear activities which include keeping abreast with industry developments and maintaining and establishing relationship with stakeholders from across the Asian nuclear supply chain. They will identify and work with prospect international companies which are planning to pursue the Asian nuclear market.
