Research Introduction

Research topic: Seagrass transplantation: Survival rates and the role of oceanographic conditions


Research Description:

- This research initiative focuses on evaluating and contrasting different approaches to transplanting Enhalus acoroides, a seagrass species, to enhance its growth and survival rates. The study will take place at two locations on Bintan Island: Berakit and Dompak, and will last for 10 months, from preparation to report writing.

- The study involves the implementation of three distinct transplantation methods at both locations. The research will also investigate the factors that influence the success of seagrass transplantation, compare the advantages and disadvantages of each transplantation method, and evaluate their cost-effectiveness and overall benefits. By addressing these objectives, the research endeavors to offer a holistic perspective on the most effective transplantation methods for seagrass restoration in the Bintan Islands. The results of this study could be used to develop sustainable seagrass restoration programs in other areas of the world.


The responsibilities of a research intern are as follows:

- Connect with seagrass seedlings supplier

- Prepare the necessary materials and execute seagrass transplantation using 3 distinct methods

- Regularly monitor the condition and growth of transplanted seagrasses in the field for 3-4 months

- Collect supporting data, including oceanographic conditions; seawater quality; and environmental conditions

- Process and statistically analyze data related to transplantation results and oceanographic and seawater quality data

- Compare the advantages and disadvantages of each transplantation method concerning variations in environmental conditions, costs, seagrass condition, and applicability

- Provide input or suggestions and conduct discussion on the research project

- Report activities regularly every two weeks

- Write the final research report


Qualification

- Final-year student or fresh graduate of BS Marine Science, BS Biology, or related fields

- Has relevant work and/or research experience in marine vegetation and associated biodiversity assessment, especially on seagrass ecosystem

- Has basic GIS skills and understanding of oceanography data

- Proficient in statistics and skilled in data visualization

- Fluent in both written and spoken English and Bahasa Indonesia

- Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to multitask

- Good data analysis and writing skills

- Communicative and able to work with minimum supervision

- Willing and physically fit to travel, can do field and desk work

- Proficiency in R programming language or SPSS is a preferred skill

- Familiar with scientific writing/publication

- Highly motivated with a clear focus
