Job

The Head of Engineering is responsible for leading and managing the engineering team. This includes setting the team's vision and strategy, hiring and developing engineers, and ensuring that the team delivers high-quality products on time and on budget. The Head of Engineering will also be responsible for working with the product team to define product requirements and ensure that the engineering team is building the right products.

What is the role of a DevOps Engineer?

As a Head of Engineering, you will play a crucial role in driving the technical vision, managing the engineering team, and ensuring the successful delivery of our products.

Responsibilities

Technical Leadership:

• Collaborate closely with the executive team to align engineering initiatives with overall business goals.
• Stay up-to-date with industry trends and emerging technologies to drive innovation within the organization.
• Define and drive the technical vision, strategy, and roadmap for our edtech products.

Team Management

• Set clear goals, provide regular feedback, and promote professional growth and development for team members.
• Lead, inspire, and mentor a talented team of software engineers, data scientists, and other technical professionals.
• Foster a culture of excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement within the engineering team.

Project Delivery

• Oversee the end-to-end software development lifecycle, ensuring timely and high-quality delivery of our products.
• Work closely with cross-functional teams, including product management, design, and quality assurance, to define requirements, prioritize tasks, and track progress.
• Proactively identify and mitigate risks, and implement effective project management practices to meet deadlines and deliverables.

Technical Excellence

• Foster a culture of innovation and experimentation, encouraging the exploration of new technologies and methodologies.
• Drive the adoption of best practices, coding standards, and quality assurance processes to ensure the reliability, scalability, and security of our software solutions.
• Conduct regular code reviews and provide technical guidance to ensure the delivery of well-designed, efficient, and maintainable code.

Collaboration And Communication

• Collaborate effectively with stakeholders across the organization to understand business needs, gather requirements, and ensure alignment between engineering and other teams.
• Communicate technical concepts and solutions in a clear and concise manner to both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Facilitate effective communication within the engineering team, ensuring information sharing, transparency, and efficient collaboration.

Requirements

• Strong organizational and project management skills with a keen attention to detail.
• Ability to think strategically, solve complex problems, and make sound decisions in a fast-paced environment.
• Experience with cloud-based technologies, microservices architecture, and scalable web applications.
• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
• Proficiency in multiple programming languages and frameworks (e.g., Python, JavaScript, etc.).
• Excellent leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills.
• Strong technical background with hands-on experience in software development and architecture.
• Comfortable being on the bleeding edge of technology, with the ability to quickly learn new technologies and follow industry trends
• Proven experience (10+ years) in a leadership role within a software engineering team, preferably in the edtech or education industry.
• Solid understanding of modern software development methodologies, tools, and best practices.
• Self-motivated and willing to pitch in on many areas enjoys being a jack of "many" trades

Responsibilities

• Identify underlying root causes to help solve complex problems relating to mission-critical services and build automation to prevent the incident recurrence, with the goal of automating response to all non-exceptional service conditions.
• Perform other duties as needed.
• Provide primary support for environment-related issues that engage multiple engineering teams. Be an active contributor in retrospective meetings with Sr. leadership about technical Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and mitigation strategies.
• Collaborate across the organization to define, prioritize, and ensure the reliability, availability, and performance of the product and services.
• Define and lead service capacity planning and demand forecasting meetings, with a focus on software performance analysis and system tuning.
• Responsible for monitoring the health of our environment and maintaining comprehensive documentation of our infrastructure and tools.
