Job Description

This position is full-time and fixed term contract based in Indonesia - Southeast Asia. The Greenpeace Southeast Asia Indonesia Oceans Campaigner (Legal and Human Rights) is assigned to fully support Greenpeace’s Global Beyond Seafood Campaign, both at national and regional-global level, with focus and expertise on Legal and Human Rights. The Oceans Campaigner will take full initiative, co-leadership and responsibility in any ocean cross-cutting issues projects development and implementation in Indonesia. The Beyond Seafood Campaign addresses the issues of illegal fishing, human rights in fisheries, and ocean protection. In certain situations, as determined by internal and external events and upon the consideration and advice from the Oceans Campaign Team Leader, the successful candidate / incumbent is expected to support other Greenpeace’s cross-campaign projects in national, regional and global level.


This is fixed term for initial one year based in Jakarta, Indonesia


Duties and Responsibilities


  • Support the project development and implementation by refining the legal and political strategies and tactics of the Beyond Seafood Campaign in Indonesia.
  • Work effectively and participate in campaign discussions and planning sessions regarding strategic issues within Greenpeace Indonesia, GPSEA, with other Greenpeace offices and with Greenpeace International (GPI) staff. This will include both written and verbal discussions as well as attendance at specific meetings with personnel within GPSEA offices-structures as well as across other national/regional offices (NROs) and GPI.
  • Support and work effectively with Oceans Campaign Team Leader(s), Campaign Assistant(s) and Public Engagement Campaigner(s) in developing the capacity of volunteers and allies and enabling their initiatives that are in line with Ocean Campaign projects’ objectives and strategies.
  • Initiate and maintain communication, lobby and political pressure with key high-level officials at relevant ministries/government agencies and ocean-marine and fisheries research institutions, judicial and human rights platforms.
  • Assist and supervise the project team in developing contents and designing online and printed materials, as well as in creating engagement framework and its tools.
  • Work effectively with the Communication Team and/or assigned Media Campaigner(s) to the Oceans Campaign projects in preparing national-level press conferences and releases. Also provide assistance in the formulation of regional and international level press releases when necessary, as well as assist in media strategy planning for the campaign and the project.
  • Initiate, develop and strengthen partnership and joint-intervention with civil societies stakeholders, networks, coalitions, experts and allies to achieve project objectives.
  • Organize, direct and supervise interns and hired contractors/freelancers.
  • Initiate, support and conduct desk and field research, including the scoping/preliminary study, as well as gather all relevant and actual information related to the ongoing campaigns, as well as produce regular internal policy briefing papers, to ensure campaign project strategies and tactics are on track.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of legal, human rights, political, legislative, regulatory, and economic frameworks as well as the scientific evidence related to impacts of slavery at sea problems, destructive fishing and biodiversity issues and its solutions.
  • Work effectively with Digital Campaigners assigned to the Oceans Campaign Projects in preparing digital campaign strategies and plans, as well as the content and products.
  • Participate in the regular project team meetings, project activities, mobilization works, field investigations, non-violent direct actions, project planning and evaluation.
  • Represent Greenpeace Indonesia on handling oceans campaign issues in regards to any media inquiries and/or public event invitations both offline and/or online type activities with close coordination and regular update to Ocean Campaign Team Leader and project teams.




Skill and Experience Requirement


  • Experience: Minimum 3 (three) years of demonstrated experience in environmental/campaign/development/activist organizations (strong experience working-addressing labor rights and human rights issues).
  • Education: Bachelor degree and/or higher on the Law major.
