Job Description

6 + Week Service Learning Internship in Bali, Indonesia!


Program Overview:

Apply for our service learning internship in Bali to embark on an enriching journey of self-discovery, cultural exploration, and service learning. This program is designed to provide you with a unique opportunity to explore key concepts such as identity, power, privilege, culture, and globalization while also engaging in meaningful service to support quality education efforts at a local after-school learning center in a low-income community. Through this immersive experience, you will develop your cultural awareness and competence while also fostering mutual learning relationships with students and local staff.


Objectives:

  1. Reflect and Explore Key Concepts: Delve into critical concepts such as identity, power, privilege, culture, and globalization. Engage in self-reflection to become more aware of your own beliefs, values, and biases. Learn to recognize and appreciate the diverse ways in which others make meaning and act.
  2. Service Learning: Collaborate with local students and staff to create meaningful and sustainable impacts in the learning center. Foster a sense of reciprocity and respect while contributing to the community's educational endeavors. Understand the needs, challenges, and opportunities in the region.
  3. Develop Cultural Awareness and Competence: Immerse yourself in Balinese culture, traditions, and customs by joining Indonesian language classes, dance classes, traditional fishing and farming classes, as well as Balinese Hindu cultural activities. Embrace the opportunity to learn from local communities, expanding your cultural awareness and competence.
  4. Support Quality Education Efforts: Contribute to enhancing the quality of education at the learning center by participating in pre-class collaborative lesson planning, active classroom settings, and after class activities.


Deliverables:

The internship has 3 primary deliverables, in addition to other routine tasks.

  1. A creative project that demonstrates valuable insights into the community, its local culture, and/or economy. This can take the form of a presentation, graphic, video, map, diagram, social media campaign, etc.
  2. 20 collaborative lesson plans completed at the local learning center
  3. A written reflection on your internship experience


Internship Details:

  • Duration in person: 5 weeks
  • Language: While service learners’ provide support for English language education, part of the internship program includes learning basic Indonesian.
  • Accommodation: Room and Board included in program cost
  • Duration remote: 1 week training on zoom pre-departure
  • Location: Tulamben, Indonesia


Who Should Apply:

This internship is open to enthusiastic individuals from diverse backgrounds who are passionate about intercultural learning, community engagement, ethical volunteer work, and/or education. Applicants should be adaptable, open-minded, and eager to embrace new perspectives and challenges. Prior experience in community service, teaching, or intercultural settings is preferred.


The program timeline is ideal for Gap Year or Gap Semester students but any person 17-30 years old is welcome to apply.


Note: As this is a highly immersive and culturally sensitive program, participants are expected to approach the experience with an open heart and a respectful attitude towards the local culture and traditions. Be prepared to broaden your horizons, challenge your assumptions, and prepare you to become a more globally aware and socially conscious individual.


Cost:

This internship is unpaid and requires a program fee to cover accommodation, food, cultural immersion activities, 24/7 on the ground staff support, insurance, and risk management team.
